Gadi Eisenkot, a key player in Israel’s political arena and leader of the Yashar party, has made a decisive statement regarding the future of Israeli-Palestinian relations in light of recent events. In the aftermath of the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, Eisenkot declared that pursuing a two-state solution is no longer a viable path. At the same time, he criticized the government’s E1 settlement plan in the West Bank, labeling it a strategic misstep that could harm Israel’s global reputation.
The E1 settlement project, which aims to expand housing between Jerusalem and Ma’ale Adumim, has been a point of contention due to its potential to disrupt territorial continuity among Palestinian areas. Eisenkot’s remarks come as the government advances with a tender for over 1,000 housing units in this contested zone, a move that has drawn significant international backlash. The European Union, in particular, has expressed its disapproval and is reportedly weighing actions against Israel if the project moves forward.
In addition to his stance on the settlements, Eisenkot directed criticism towards Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, focusing on the increase in settler violence in the West Bank. He contended that their policies have undermined the Israel Defense Forces’ (IDF) authority in the region, posing a threat to Israel’s international legitimacy and national interests.
Responding to Eisenkot’s criticisms, Smotrich defended the E1 construction initiative, arguing that it plays a crucial role in preventing the establishment of a Palestinian state in proximity to Jerusalem.
