Cross-Border QR Technology to Innovate Kazakhstan-China Payments by 2026

by admin477351

By the close of 2026, Kazakhstan aims to introduce cross-border QR-code payment systems with China, enabling seamless mobile transactions for travelers between the two nations. This initiative is part of a broader plan by Kazakhstan’s National Bank to establish cross-border payment services with a total of 11 countries, including prominent economies such as India and the United Arab Emirates, alongside regional neighbors Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. The rollout of systems with other nations is anticipated to commence from mid-2027.

The forthcoming agreement with China signifies a potential expansion of the yuan’s use, extending beyond its traditional roles in trade and investment to encompass everyday consumer transactions. This development is indicative of the deepening financial ties between China and Central Asian countries, a trend that aligns with the objectives of Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative.

The proposed payment framework builds upon existing collaborations between Kazakhstan and China. Notably, in 2024, Kazakhstan’s major fintech firm Kaspi.kz forged a partnership with Alipay, allowing Kaspi customers to execute mobile payments within China. This partnership illustrates the groundwork already laid for advancing such financial integrations.

China has been actively promoting the broader international adoption of the yuan, aiming to fortify cross-border payment systems and lessen reliance on the US dollar. Beijing’s efforts include expanding the use of the digital yuan and QR-based payment platforms, both domestically and internationally.

The Kazakhstan-China payment initiative holds the potential to enhance financial connectivity across the region significantly. By increasing the utilization of yuan-based payment systems throughout Central Asia, this collaboration could serve as a catalyst for further financial integration and cooperation in the area.
