A significant meeting convened to address national legislation, capacity-building programs, and other pressing issues related to chemical safety and international cooperation. This two-day event gathered 18 representatives from the OPCW National Authorities of Eastern European Member States in Ljubljana. The aim was to tackle the practical challenges and share best practices in implementing the Chemical Weapons Convention, while also seeking to bolster regional collaboration.
The agenda featured presentations from participating countries, an overview of the OPCW’s past activities, and discussions on current issues and challenges. A particular emphasis was placed on the impact of artificial intelligence and the crucial role academia plays in ensuring chemical safety and preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction.
Slovenia is an active participant in OPCW initiatives and strictly adheres to the Chemical Weapons Convention, which bans the development, production, stockpiling, and use of chemical weapons, mandating their destruction under international oversight. With 193 member states, the Convention is recognized as one of the most successful and widely ratified international treaties. The Slovenian Chemicals Office oversees the Convention’s implementation at the national level, supervising industrial activities involving strategic chemicals and working alongside the OPCW in conducting international inspections.
On May 12, Slovenia joined the OPCW Executive Council, the organization’s governing body tasked with promoting adherence to the Chemical Weapons Convention. During its two-year term, Slovenia is committed to preventing the spread of chemical weapons and enhancing trust and security within the international arena. In his opening remarks at the OPCW Regional Meeting, Boštjan Peršin from the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs highlighted Slovenia’s focus on supporting the development of new technologies and the peaceful, secure use of chemistry as key priorities while serving on the Executive Council. Slovenia’s collaboration with the OPCW, exemplified by co-organizing the Regional Meeting, underscores its dedication to maintaining the highest standards of chemical safety, transparency, and the responsible use of chemicals for peaceful purposes.
