Iran has emphasized the enduring and historical nature of its relationship with India following a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. This meeting took place on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. According to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei, Tehran places significant value on its ties with New Delhi, particularly highlighting cooperation in trade and economic sectors.

A key topic of discussion during the talks between the two leaders was the Chabahar Port, a vital area of collaboration for both nations. The discussions also included a range of regional developments and initiatives aimed at fostering lasting peace. Both India and Iran expressed their commitment to enhancing their longstanding partnership across various sectors, with Modi reaffirming India’s dedication to this relationship.

In addition to bilateral issues, the meeting also touched upon the ongoing regional situation, with both leaders exchanging views on diplomatic efforts necessary to achieve peace. The dialogue underscored the importance of cooperation in addressing regional challenges and working towards common goals.

The talks between Modi and Pezeshkian have garnered attention from the United States as well. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged that countries are free to conduct their own foreign policy. However, he emphasized that nations should not facilitate Iran in circumventing U.S. sanctions, indicating a keen interest in the developments from the U.S. perspective.
