Netanyahu Highlights Pilot Screening Concerns After Flydubai Co-Pilot Incident

by admin477351

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has voiced concerns about potential security lapses after an Omani co-pilot allegedly attacked the captain of a flydubai flight en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Netanyahu suggested the co-pilot had undergone what he described as “Islamist radicalisation,” emphasizing the need to review screening processes for pilots flying to Israel.

The incident occurred on Flight FZ1073, which was carrying 174 passengers when the co-pilot reportedly assaulted the captain. The altercation led to a loss of significant altitude before control was regained. Passengers intervened to restrain the co-pilot, allowing another pilot to assume control of the aircraft.

Netanyahu’s comments came as part of an initial investigation, which he said indicated the co-pilot had been subject to “radical indoctrination.” The prime minister noted that the co-pilot made statements suggesting a desire to die, further underscoring the severity of the situation.

Highlighting a potential procedural gap, Netanyahu pointed out that the incident involved a pilot from a country without diplomatic ties to Israel. He mentioned that while background checks have been conducted on pilots for certain flights, this event necessitates a thorough review of the current screening protocols.

Authorities are also investigating any possible connections the co-pilot might have with Iran, though Netanyahu cautioned that it is too early to draw definitive conclusions. More information is expected to be uncovered as the investigation progresses.
