Zelenskyy: Ukraine Lacked Early Warning Before Recent Russian Missile Strikes

by admin477351

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Tuesday that Ukraine did not receive advance warnings from international partners before a Russian ballistic missile attack on Kyiv, which resulted in damage to civilian infrastructure. The attack, which occurred on Monday, involved five missiles targeting civilian areas, according to Zelenskyy.

Zelenskyy highlighted the severity of the strikes and emphasized the critical role of timely intelligence sharing in safeguarding lives. He noted that early warnings about missile launches enable civilians and emergency services to prepare effectively for such attacks.

While Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha confirmed ongoing intelligence cooperation with international allies, he suggested that the lack of warning might be attributed to the specific type of weapon used by Russia. This incident arises amidst uncertainties regarding US intelligence support for Ukraine, with reports indicating that American officials had warned Ukrainian counterparts about the potential suspension of intelligence sharing by the Trump administration. Despite this, Ukrainian officials have underscored the importance of continued cooperation, particularly for detecting missile launches and long-range bomber activities.

The situation is further complicated by rising tensions over attacks on energy infrastructure. US President Donald Trump has called on Ukraine to halt strikes on Russian oil refineries and announced an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin concerning diesel supplies. Trump also claimed that an energy ceasefire had been agreed upon by Russia and Ukraine. However, Zelenskyy countered that Ukraine had not received any confirmation of such an arrangement.

Despite the reported ceasefire, Zelenskyy accused Russia of persisting in its attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities. He stated that Ukraine had temporarily paused its strikes on Russian energy infrastructure following the US announcement but stressed that any suspension of attacks must be mutual and backed by credible assurances.

Russian missile strikes continue to inflict civilian casualties and damage across Ukraine. In a separate attack on the city of Kharkiv, Zelenskyy reported that four people were killed and 41 injured when a residential building was destroyed.

Amid escalating Russian attacks on urban centers and energy infrastructure as winter approaches, Ukraine has appealed to its partners for additional air-defense support, including the provision of Patriot missile systems.
