In a series of remarks on Wednesday, former US President Donald Trump claimed he enjoys substantial popularity in Israel, suggesting he could potentially run for Prime Minister of the country. This assertion was made while Trump expressed support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during discussions about the ongoing tensions with Iran.
Speaking in videos circulated on the platform X, Trump addressed questions regarding Netanyahu and Israel’s stance on Iran. Trump expressed confidence in Netanyahu’s alignment with his views, describing the Israeli leader as a “very good man” and a “great guy.” He characterized Netanyahu as a “wartime prime minister” who, in his opinion, was not receiving fair treatment in Israel.
Highlighting his own favorability in Israel, Trump humorously mentioned the prospect of running for office there. “I’m right now at 99% in Israel. I could run for prime minister,” he quipped. “So maybe after I do this, I’ll go to Israel, run for prime minister,” he added, referencing a poll that purportedly placed his approval at 99%.
Trump also commented on the political climate in Israel, critiquing what he saw as unfair treatment of Netanyahu by Israel’s leadership. This comes as Israeli legislators moved forward with a bill from Netanyahu’s coalition that could lead to the dissolution of parliament and potential new elections.
Amid these developments, Trump spoke on the escalating situation with Iran, indicating that the United States was nearing a critical juncture. He mentioned that the situation was in “the final stages” and suggested that the US was prepared to take assertive action if necessary. “We’ll see what happens,” Trump said, suggesting that military action could be toughened if Iran does not agree to a deal. Despite the heightened tensions, diplomatic negotiations between Washington and Tehran are reportedly still in progress.
